SUMMARY:Virtual IEAI Speaker Series: AI and Legal Tech: Ethical Perspective with Thomas Hildebrandt and Henrik Olsen
DESCRIPTION:With its Speaker Series\, the TUM Institute for Ethics in Artificial Intelligence invites experts from all over the world to talk about ethics and governance of AI. These events serve as an important platform for sharing new research and exchanging knowledge. \nThe 20th session of the TUM IEAI Speaker Series will take place March 23rd\, virtually. The topic of the session will be on AI and Legal Tech: Ethical Perspective. \nWe are pleased to announce that the speakers for this session are Prof. Thomas Hildebrandt and Prof. Henrik Olsen. \nThomas Troels Hildebrandt and Henrik Palmer Olsen will present an overview of the current trend toward using AI as an instrument to implement and enforce the law. In many countries around Europe and in the EU itself\, AI is seen as a way to overcome challenges that are increasingly facing the modern state: growing regulatory complexity and with it an associated economic burden of being compliant; an increasing lack of lawyers to perform the the legal work needed; demands for more homogenous application of the law across local and national jurisdictions. They will be outlining two basic approaches to legal tech which is being considered and developed throughout the world: 1) Law as code and 2) Recommender systems for legal decision-making. Law as code addresses the challenges of embedding legal rules and decision logic in information systems and technologies and methods for making legislation machine readable and executable. Professor Hildebrandt and Professor Olsen will be giving examples of technologies developed in the EcoKnow.org research project for providing a traceable machine readable and executable model of legal texts that can support decisions and workflows\, which is now used in local and central government institutions in Denmark. Recommender systems are build from existing databases of decisions\, which are machine read by NLP algorithms\, and then compared to the factual information in new incoming cases. Matching a new case to a previous decision (based on the principle of “most similar”) then function as a recommendation to the lawyer as to how the new case should be decided. In regards to both of these approaches they will discuss the ethical pros and cons and point to the AI Regulation proposal by the European Commission as a possible best balance. \nHenrik Palmer Olsen is an internationally leading legal scholar and a Professor of Jurisprudence at the University of Copenhagen (UCPH)\, Faculty of Law. As co-founder of the Center of Excellence for International Courts (iCourts) he has contributed to the development of a foundational science research agenda in law\, and has pioneered research in the new field of computational law. SUMMARY:Virtual IEAI Speaker Series: To Trust a Robot: Examining Human-Robot Trust during Emergency Evacuations with Alan R. Wagner
DESCRIPTION:With its Speaker Series\, the TUM Institute for Ethics in Artificial Intelligence invites experts from all over the world to talk about ethics and governance of AI. These events serve as an important platform for sharing new research and exchanging knowledge. \nThe October session of the TUM IEAI Speaker Series will take place on 14th of October\, 3pm (CET) virtually via Zoom. The topic of the session will be “To Trust a Robot: Examining Human-Robot Trust during Emergency Evacuations”.\n \nWe are pleased to announce that the speaker for this session is Alan R. Wagner\, Professor of Aerospace Engineering and a Research Associate with The Pennsylvania State University. His research focuses on human-robot interaction\, ethics\, and aerial vehicle control and teaming applied. His work examines search and rescue and robot led emergency evacuation. His research has won several awards including being selected for by the Air Force Young Investigator Program\, a Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Award\, and was described as the 13th most important invention of 2010 by Time Magazine. He received his Ph.D. in computer science from Georgia Institute of Technology. He also holds a master’s degree in computer science from Boston University and a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Northwestern University. \nWagner’s latest book\, An Introduction to Ethics in Robotics and AI (Springer\, 2021\, with Christoph Bartneck\, Christoph Lütge\, and Sean Welsh)\, is meant to provide balanced and\, at times\, conflicting viewpoints as to the benefits and deficits of artificial intelligence through the lens of ethics. \nDr. Wagner’s presentation at the IEAI Speaker Series examines human-robot trust\, presenting the concepts that underpin interpersonal trust and relating these ideas to human-robot interaction scenarios. His work looks at how and why people trust robots during emergencies and the ethical ramifications of developing robots that present themselves as trustworthy. He considers the problem of correct trust calibration – creating machines that promote correct calibration of trust by people. His talk will also discuss under and over trust. Under trust occurs when people lack trust in a trustworthy system\, whereas overtrust describes a situation in which people place too much faith in a robot. Finally\, he will discuss the ethical implications for society of trusting robots. \nThis event is being photographed and/or video recorded for archival\, educational\, and related promotional purposes. We also video stream many of these video recordings through the IEAI web site. By attending or participating in this event\, you are giving your consent to be photographed and/or video recorded and you are waiving any and all claims regarding the use of your image by the Institute of Ethics in Artificial Intelligence. SUMMARY:IEAI Speaker Series - Inaugural Session with Lionel P. Robert
DESCRIPTION:With its new Speaker Series\, the TUM Institute for Ethics in Artificial Intelligence is bringing experts from all over the world to Munich to talk about Ethics and Governance of AI. These events serve as an important platform for sharing new research and exchanging knowledge. \nThe inaugural session of  the TUM IEAI Speaker Series  will take place on 13 December 2019\, 10am\, at the Hochschule für Politik in Richard Wagner Straße 1\, Munich. The topic for this first session will be “Designing Fair Artificial Intelligence for Managing Employees: A Review\, Critique\, and Design Agenda”. \nOrganizations are rapidly employing artificial intelligence (AI) systems to manage their workers. However\, AI systems have been found at times to be unfair to workers. Unfairness toward workers has been associated with decreased worker effort and increased worker turnover. To avoid such problems\, AI systems must be designed to support fairness and redress instances of unfairness. Despite the attention related to AI unfairness\, there has not been a theoretical and systematic approach to developing a design agenda. This paper addresses this issue in three ways. First\, we present the organizational justice theory as a framework of fairness. Second\, we review the scant design literature on AI fairness in organizations. Finally\, we introduce a framework to guide our design research agenda for fairer AI systems in organizations. \nWe are pleased to announce that the speaker of this first event is Lionel P. Robert Jr. of the University of Michigan. \nLionel P. Robert Jr. is an Associate Professor in the School of Information (UMSI) at the University of Michigan. He is a former BAT Fellow and KPMG Scholar. Lionel is the current director of the Michigan Autonomous Vehicle Research Intergroup Collaboration (MAVRIC) and an affiliate of the University of Michigan Robotics Institute\, the National Center for Institutional Diversity and the Center for Hybrid Intelligence Systems all at the University of Michigan and the Center for Computer-Mediated Communication at Indiana University. Dr. Robert has published in journals such as Information Systems Research\, Journal of the Association of Information Systems and the Journal of the Association of Information Science and Technology as well as top HCI conferences such as CHI\, CSCW\, HRI\, WSDM and ICWSM. His research has been sponsored by the U.S. Army\, Toyota Research Institute\, MCity\, Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies and the National Science Foundation. He has appeared in print\, radio and/or television for such outlets as ABC\, CNN\, CNBC\, Michigan Radio\, Inc.\, Washington Examiner\, Detroit News and the Associated Press. \nCoffee and tea will be served on arrival. \nPrior registration is appreciated\, please use the form below to register for the event.

SUMMARY:Future Forum New York
DESCRIPTION:Demystify A.I.  at the Future Forum New York\n\nFrom presidential candidates to Hollywood stars to Silicon Valley entrepreneurs\, everyone’s talking about artificial intelligence. Yet despite the buzz\, AI remains hard to define. To scientists and tech entrepreneurs\, AI represents opportunity\, but to many people\, it carries with it uncertainty and concern. Stuck between these two\, policy makers struggle to build regulatory frameworks that offer a middle ground.\n\nRight now\, as AI is being developed\, as public discourse around it is being shaped\, and as regulations that will drive and frame it are being created\, we come together to DEMYSTIFY AI.
