SUMMARY:Virtual IEAI Speaker Series - Experiments in "Machine Behavior: Cooperating With and Through Machines" with Iyad Rahwan
DESCRIPTION:Due to the current situation\, the IEAI has decided to hold its December Speaker Series virtually via Zoom. \n\n\n\nWith its Speaker Series\, the TUM Institute for Ethics in Artificial Intelligence invites experts from all over the world to talk about ethics and governance of AI. These events serve as an important platform for sharing new research and exchanging knowledge. \nThe December session of the TUM IEAI Speaker Series will take place on 1 December 2020\, 12pm (CEST)\, virtually via Zoom. We will send out the link to all registered attendees on the day of the event. \nWe are pleased to announce that the speaker for this session is Iyad Rahwan\, who will be talking about Experiments in Machine Behavior: Cooperating With and Through Machines. \n \n\n\nIyad Rahwan is a director of the Max Planck Institute for Human Development in Berlin\, where he founded and directs the Center for Humans & Machines. He is also an honorary professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the Technical University of Berlin. Until June 2020\, he was an Associate Professor of Media Arts & Sciences at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). A native of Aleppo\, Syria\, Rahwan holds a PhD from the University of Melbourne\, Australia. \nRahwan’s work lies at the intersection of computer science and human behavior\, with a focus on collective intelligence\, large-scale cooperation\, and the societal impact of Artificial Intelligence and social media. His early work explored how  social media can be used to achieve unprecedented feats\, such as searching an entire continent within 9 hours\, and re-assembling shredded documents. He led the winning team in the US State Department’s Tag Challenge\, using social media to locate individuals in remote cities within 12 hours using only their mug shots. \nRecently\, Rahwan led a team that crowdsourced 40 million decisions from people worldwide about the ethics of autonomous vehicles. Through a series of projects\, he also exposed tens of millions of people world-wide to new implications of AI\, such as bias in machine learning\, human-AI creativity and the ability of AI to induce fear and empathy in humans at scale. \nAnother theme that interests Iyad is the future of work and human-machine cooperation. He demonstrated the world’s first human-level strategic cooperation by an AI\, and innovated new methods to anticipate the potential impact of AI on human labor. \nIyad Rahwan’s work appeared in major academic journals\, including Science\, Nature and PNAS\, and features regularly in major media outlets\, including the New York Times\, The Economist\, and the Wall Street Journal.

SUMMARY:IEAI Speaker Series - Inaugural Session with Lionel P. Robert
DESCRIPTION:With its new Speaker Series\, the TUM Institute for Ethics in Artificial Intelligence is bringing experts from all over the world to Munich to talk about Ethics and Governance of AI. These events serve as an important platform for sharing new research and exchanging knowledge. \nThe inaugural session of  the TUM IEAI Speaker Series  will take place on 13 December 2019\, 10am\, at the Hochschule für Politik in Richard Wagner Straße 1\, Munich. The topic for this first session will be “Designing Fair Artificial Intelligence for Managing Employees: A Review\, Critique\, and Design Agenda”. \nOrganizations are rapidly employing artificial intelligence (AI) systems to manage their workers. However\, AI systems have been found at times to be unfair to workers. Unfairness toward workers has been associated with decreased worker effort and increased worker turnover. To avoid such problems\, AI systems must be designed to support fairness and redress instances of unfairness. Despite the attention related to AI unfairness\, there has not been a theoretical and systematic approach to developing a design agenda. This paper addresses this issue in three ways. First\, we present the organizational justice theory as a framework of fairness. Second\, we review the scant design literature on AI fairness in organizations. Finally\, we introduce a framework to guide our design research agenda for fairer AI systems in organizations. \nWe are pleased to announce that the speaker of this first event is Lionel P. Robert Jr. of the University of Michigan. \nLionel P. Robert Jr. is an Associate Professor in the School of Information (UMSI) at the University of Michigan. He is a former BAT Fellow and KPMG Scholar. Lionel is the current director of the Michigan Autonomous Vehicle Research Intergroup Collaboration (MAVRIC) and an affiliate of the University of Michigan Robotics Institute\, the National Center for Institutional Diversity and the Center for Hybrid Intelligence Systems all at the University of Michigan and the Center for Computer-Mediated Communication at Indiana University. Dr. Robert has published in journals such as Information Systems Research\, Journal of the Association of Information Systems and the Journal of the Association of Information Science and Technology as well as top HCI conferences such as CHI\, CSCW\, HRI\, WSDM and ICWSM. His research has been sponsored by the U.S. Army\, Toyota Research Institute\, MCity\, Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies and the National Science Foundation. SUMMARY:Future Forum New York
DESCRIPTION:Demystify A.I.  at the Future Forum New York\n\nFrom presidential candidates to Hollywood stars to Silicon Valley entrepreneurs\, everyone’s talking about artificial intelligence. Yet despite the buzz\, AI remains hard to define. To scientists and tech entrepreneurs\, AI represents opportunity\, but to many people\, it carries with it uncertainty and concern. Stuck between these two\, policy makers struggle to build regulatory frameworks that offer a middle ground.\n\nRight now\, as AI is being developed\, as public discourse around it is being shaped\, and as regulations that will drive and frame it are being created\, we come together to DEMYSTIFY AI.
